Designing a home in Palghar: materials that survive humidity and the monsoon
Palghar gets around 1,450 mm of rain a year, most of it between June and September, and humidity stays above 80 percent through the monsoon. Interiors here have to be designed for four wet months as much as for eight dry ones.
Much of The House of Enlyvn's early work was in Palghar, so we have seen what lasts and what swells, stains or peels by the second monsoon. The good news is that a humid climate does not limit design. It just changes the materials underneath it.
Carpentry: start with the board
- Use boiling-water-resistant (BWR) or marine plywood for kitchens, bathroom vanities and anything near a wet wall. Ordinary commercial ply and MDF absorb moisture and swell at the edges.
- Seal every edge. Edge banding on all cut edges, including the backs and undersides that nobody sees, stops moisture getting in.
- Keep wardrobes off external walls where possible, or leave a small gap and ventilation at the back so air can move.
- Choose hardware in stainless steel or good-quality coated fittings. Cheap hinges and channels rust quickly in coastal air.
Walls and paint
- Fix the source of damp first. Paint over a leaking wall will fail. External cracks, window sills and terrace waterproofing need attention before interiors.
- Use a damp-proof primer and washable, anti-fungal paint on external walls and in bathrooms and kitchens.
- Be careful with wallpaper on external walls. Textured paint, lime plaster or panelling with a ventilated gap behind it handle humidity better.
Floors, bathrooms and balconies
- Vitrified tiles and natural stone handle moisture well. Solid wood and laminate flooring are risky on ground floors and near balconies.
- Waterproof bathrooms properly before tiling, including a turn-up on the walls, and slope the floor towards the drain.
- Plan balcony drainage so heavy rain does not flow into the living room, especially if the balcony is being enclosed.
Fabrics and furniture
- Choose fabrics that breathe (cotton, linen blends) and removable covers that can be washed after the monsoon.
- Leave space behind sofas and beds on external walls, and avoid pushing mattresses flat against damp floors.
- Metal, stone, ceramic and good laminates are practical choices. Our Colour Bloom project was designed without any wood at all.
Before every monsoon: clean window drain holes, check terrace and balcony drains, air out wardrobes on dry days, and keep a small dehumidifier or silica packs in closed storage.
